It might look funny seeing a baby with Olympic weights, but did you know that youth resistance training is a powerhouse for physical and mental health benefits and performance.

Starting age is dependant on maturity, both physical and mental, as the challenge of weightlifting can be difficult to understand and complete when kids are below 10. Kids and teens, especially from ages 11 to 22, can see positive changes in body composition, performance, and confidence from weightlifting.

No need to worry about stunted growth either — that is a myth unless you happen to fracture a bone at the growth plate, but research shows that with proper supervision, lifting is safer than most sports! In fact, it can even lower the risk of injuries in other sports.

To get the most out of training, starting with plyometric training is most effective before the time frame when you are growing height the fastest —around age 12 in girls and age 14 in boys. During or after this fast height increase period, combined weight training and plyometrics are best for results. Maximal strength improvements happen at different times as well; boys see their biggest strength gains between 16-17 years, while for females, the peak is around 21-22.

Another flowering plant with this effect (& even better research) is Hibiscus! Yum! 🌺

Typically you will spend an hour or more with your ND, working deeply investigating your health, treating your health problems in appointment, and reciving health advice and herbal/other prescriptions to take home. Appointments with MD's are typically shorter (10-15 minutes), but they can provide excellent acute care and OHIP covered care in this timeframe! You typically do not get treatment IN appointment with MDs (other than specialists), but instead walk away with a referral, requisition, or prescription to help manage your concerns.

Typically you will spend an hour or more with your ND, working deeply investigating your health, treating your health problems in appointment, and reciving health advice and herbal/other prescriptions to take home. Appointments with MD's are typically shorter (10-15 minutes), but they can provide excellent acute care and OHIP covered care in this timeframe! You typically do not get treatment IN appointment with MDs (other than specialists), but instead walk away with a referral, requisition, or prescription to help manage your concerns.

Check out this "warming" stew I made as part of a cooking lesson! This would be great for a cool day, or if you are someone with swelling, poor circulation, or loose stools.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, over thousands of years practitioners observed that certain foods had either "cooling" or "warming" effects on the body. Cooling foods are more likely to cause loose stool, feelings of cold, poor circulation, swelling, and more, especially in those who have colder constitutions. On the other hand, warming foods (like this bean, beef, turnip, and clove stew) may help alleviate these ailments. Still they may not be indicated for those who already sweat a lot, who have constipation or GERD, or other "heat" related symptoms.

So much to be explored still in terms of research but some highly promising work and studies are being done surrounding TCM concepts 👌🏽
